Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood?
By Trina Sonnenberg
Who are the People In Your Neighborhood? No, I am not Mr. Rogers, I am a freelance commercial writer, which makes me a topic of conversation in my neighborhood. No one is really quite sure what I do for a living. I am an enigma to the people here. I do enjoy that status, and I probably perpetuate it. I live in a place where just about everyone is a staunch Republican, which I am not; so, as you can imagine, that makes me strange to them all by itself. I live in a Christian dominated town with the only minorities being Mexicans. There are no jobs here, not even an entry level position, bagging groceries at the local store. Many people are unemployed and living on the edge here. We have virtually no crime in this area, but alcohol and drug abuse seem prevalent. There are plenty of strange characters in this town of 764 people. We have goths, pot-heads, drunks and nosey people who can't seem to stop gossiping about everyone else. This is a town where everyone believes what they hear without question. However, on the flip side of all of that, there are a few really good people here, and neighbors can usually be depended upon for help when it is needed. It is nice not to have to deal with traffic, crime or the stench that comes with big city life. My little corner of the world is tucked safely away, more than 100 miles from the nearest city. That means it is a two hour drive to Wal-Mart, McDonald's, or the hospital. All of which makes it interesting to live here. The only traffic problems we have are the seasonal cattle drives. When a rancher moves his cows, it makes driving a tad slower. It takes a different skill set to drive through a heard on the road. I now live about mile from Main Street, and I love it! I can see mountains all around the house. I have deer and elk passing through my yard all of the time, and raccoons, bears, coyotes and bobcats seem to like to visit too. We had a fox in the backyard the other day and he was beautiful. I've never seen a tail quite like his before. A year ago, I published a book about my life, and there are many mentions of my neighborhood in there. http://stores.lulu.com/triizine Forever and Always...

Where you live seems very nice Trina, with the wildlife coming through your yard, and being able to see the mountains from your house must be awesome! A far cry from city life! Great intel.

Thank you for sharing your small town living, Trina. You mentioned the distance to major stores, but what about the schools for the children? Sounds like another intel!! Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick

Our Junior/senior high school is about a mile from my house and the elementary school in five miles down the highway, in the next town, Naturita. Main Street is only two miles long and runs from one end of town to the other. (north and south) It is also referred to as Colorado Hwy 97.
Trina, What a wonderful story. Sounds like you have a little piece of heaven in your own backyard. Rosemary
