The Misconception of Welfare

By Trina Sonnenberg

The majority of people who have never applied for public assistance believe that those who ask for help are lazy and unmotivated. This is simply not true and it is very unfair. Most people who apply for and receive public assistance genuinely need the help. Sure, there are those who abuse the system, there always have been and there probably always will be, but most Americans who seek help are in true need.

Many Americans who are in need don't get the help they seek, for a myriad of reasons. For example, if you own a house that you do not live in or rent out, the government will not help you because they assume that the house is a resource, even though most homes cannot be sold in today's market. Illegal aliens are receiving benefits, but natural American citizens are denied.

I remember trying to get food stamps when my oldest child was two years old. I was denied as a single, newly divorced mother because I had a job making $6.00/hour. I tried to get medical assistance for my child and was again denied for the same reason. I made too much money.

Many people who apply for help are denied for bogus reasons. If their employment paid enough to go without government help, they would not be applying for it. Most people try to avoid the stigma attached to government subsidies. Most Americans do not want a hand-out, but are looking for a hand up. Today's economy and political atmosphere make it all the more difficult for these people to get their bills paid and keep Cheerios on the table.

Welfare recipients are among the most misunderstood people in this country. Most are just trying to get by. Those who do not need help have stigmatized the people who do need help. They are referred to as lazy milkers of the system, when in fact, most are not.

Many of the applicants are women who are looking out for their children. Women trying to provide meals and health care for their kids. Once this country begins denying illegal aliens welfare benefits, perhaps some of the American citizens who are in need can get the help they seek. The biggest drain on the welfare system is coming from the illegals who receive benefits over the citizens of this country. Not from the citizens themselves.

Yes, there are citizens that abuse the system, but they are not as many as the conservative media would have us believe. The abusers of the system come primarily from outside our borders.

I'd bet that we would not have the budgetary problems we have in this country if we'd close our borders, stop pampering those who do not belong here, and send all of the foreign criminals home. Our prison system is maxed out and the majority of inmates are not citizens of this country, yet we clothe and feed them. We see to their medical needs, while law abiding citizens are denied the help they need, even though they have paid their taxes and the illegals have paid none.

You may be right about the budgetary problems, but if all the illegals were sent home, the cost of fruit and vegetables - as well as just about everything else - would soar, perhaps even double or triple, making life even tougher for those who are hard up. People with low incomes wouldn't be able to afford anything at all.

Thank you for sharing this interesting intel, Trina.
Closing our borders would be next to impossible, considering that we can't shoot a person who breaks into our home, if they're not carring a gun. How do we protect our country, if we can't protect our home?
This needs more discussion, and I hope that you will continue the intels.
Best wishes.
